Discover the ultimate guide to year-round artificial grass care. Simple, regular maintenance to keep your synthetic lawn pristine every season.
Artificial grass is a great alternative to natural lawns. Gone are the days of dragging out your lawn mower, paying for more grass seed or chucking down fertiliser.

To keep it looking lush throughout the year, it’s essential to carry out some maintenance – think of it as carrying out work little and often and you should have no concerns.

This guide covers everything you need to know about artificial grass care, including cleaning, general maintenance, and seasonal tips.
Garden with artificial grass

Artificial grass maintenance

Maintaining your artificial grass involves a few simple steps to be carried out regularly to ensure it stays in top condition.

Remove leaves and debris

Use a broom or an electric leaf blower to remove leaves and debris. If left and the leaves become wet, your artificial grass may stain.

Check for weeds

Although artificial grass has a weed barrier, some weeds may still grow around the edges, so they should be removed as soon as you see them.

Wash away the waste

Always clean up after your pets have used the grass to go to the toilet. Use a hose to rinse the area and remove any remaining waste.

Regular watering can help flush out any dust or debris that may have accumulated, keeping your grass feeling clean and fresh. However, it’s important to avoid excessive watering, as this can lead to waterlogging and potential damage to the fake grass.

How to clean artificial grass

Cleaning your artificial grass is crucial to maintaining its appearance and hygiene.

Blot spills immediately with a paper towel. For stubborn stains, use a mixture of warm water and mild soap, and scrub gently with a soft brush.

Occasionally, rinse your lawn with a garden hose to remove dust and dirt. If pet odours are a problem, use a mixture of water and vinegar (1:1 ratio) to neutralise the smell.

Seasonal advice

Artificial grass requires different care techniques to keep your garden in perfect condition, and these can differ depending on the season.

Summer maintenance tips

Keep it cool in summer as artificial grass can absorb and retain heat from direct sunlight, making it warm to the touch. By selecting the right infill material, you can also reduce the heat levels, ensuring the grass keeps cool.

Shade structures or planting trees and tall plants can be strategically placed around your lawn, you can significantly reduce the amount of sunlight your grass receives. Plants with dense foliage can also create a natural cooling effect for your artificial grass. As the plants release moisture, it will help cool the surrounding area.

If you enjoy a BBQ or sitting by a fire pit at night, make sure it’s not near your artificial grass. Falling ash can cause the grass to melt or even ignite. Also, avoid smoking nearby to prevent fire hazards.

State the rules when hosting. Avoid using glass in the garden and don’t walk on your artificial grass with stiletto shoes or even football boots that are studded. These items are sharp and could end up damaging your lawn with holes and tears.

If drinks get spilled, hose off with cold water, or for stickier substances, use a dash of washing up liquid.

Winter maintenance tips

In winter, artificial grass requires specific care to avoid damage. Removing ice can damage the fibres, so it should be left to melt naturally.

Avoid using salt as it can clog the drainage elements of your grass. Instead, if there's heavy snowfall, remove as much snow as you can with a plastic shovel, avoiding metal forks that can cause damage.

The grass fibres may look flattened once the snow has melted, however there’s nothing to worry about, as it will bounce back. You can also give it a helping hand by using a stiff brush to get the fibres looking at their best again.

Choosing the best artificial grass

There are three main types of artificial grass yarn: polyethylene, polypropylene, and nylon.

Polyethylene is the most commonly used because of its versatility. The yarn is durable, looks natural and feels soft to the touch.

Our best-selling yarn is sold with our Aspen artificial grass, featuring a 30mm pile height, it is a popular choice for its realistic appearance and durability.
